Komphela urges Chiefs players to reproduce the heights they displayed against Pirates

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has admitted he’s struggling to get his players to replicate the dizzy heights that saw his swashbuckling team waltz past a bemused Orlando Pirates in the Carling Black Label Cup in July. Chiefs beat the old enemy 2-0 at a packed Soccer City in a polished performance that has since proved to be a false dawn‚ given AmaKhosi’s recent run of indifferent results.Komphela suggested that his players may have peaked too early and this is the reason why his players have struggled to get out of the starting blocks this season.‘‘To me that (the Carling Black Label game) was almost a perfect match‚” Komphela said.'You can have a crap match‚ get a good result and all of a sudden you look like superstars' - KomphelaSteve Komphela admitted a sense of relief as his Kaizer Chiefs side finally registered a win this season but said it was more for the fans than for himself. Chiefs have played three league matches so far this season and they have won one‚ drawn one and lost one.The 2-0 defeat to BidVest Wits in the opening match of the Premier Soccer League season and 1-1 draw with Platinum Stars a week ago put Komphela and his players under considerable pressure.A defeat to newcomers Cape Town City in the quarterfinals of the MTN8 only served to tighten the screws on the Chiefs coach and his charges.A midweek away 1-0 win over Highlands Park eased the pressure and Chiefs can go into Saturday’s tricky league encounter against the stubborn Maritzburg United at Soccer City with some confidence.Kaizer Chiefs huff and puff to their first win of the season It took a second half penalty to relieve Kaizer Chiefs of their crisis of confidence as they won their first game of the season by beating newly promoted Highlands Park 1-0 away on Wednesday. Komphela gave an honest appraisal of the four matches his charges have played in this campaign and he admitted that their performances still fall short of the breathtaking display they dished out to Pirates.‘‘Carling Black Label Cup? Yes. And then BidVest Wits? No."Cape Town City? Performance okay. But result? No.‘‘Platinum Stars? Neither here nor there because of a lack of confidence. Could we have won the match? No comment.‘‘Then (against Highlands Park) we got the results. Okay. ‘And performance? We can do better.‘‘But we need to get very close to what we did in the Carling Black Label Cup. That is how we should play football.” — TMG Digital..
