Sundowns see dollar signs

Mamelodi Sundowns could be in for a massive financial windfall in the next month with millions in prize money lying in wait if they keep up their successful ways. On the club’s immediate horizon is the R8-million prize money that the winner of the MTN8 earns. Sundowns meet Bidvest Wits in the final at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.In the African Champions League‚ Sundowns are already guaranteed a purse of US$1-million for reaching the final‚ which at today’s exchange rate is R13‚7-million – by far the single biggest sum the club has ever earned from a single competition.But if they win the Champions League – where they meet Zamalek of Egypt in the final -- it will be a staggering R48-million (US$3‚5-million).This is more than four times what they earned for winning the Premier Soccer League last year.But Champions League success also means participation in the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan at the end of the year.That also offers prize money with a minimum of US$1-million just for participating‚ and going up to US$5-million (almost R70-million) for the winner. FIFA pay all costs as well‚ including supplying 35 business class tickets to Japan and back per club...
