Polokwane City target Pirates for third consecutive PSL win

14 October 2016 - 17:51 By Tiisetso Malepa

The last and only time Polokwane City managed a hat-trick of wins in the top flight was two years ago when the team was under the tutelage of Serbian coach Kostadin Papic. City will have an opportunity to repeat that rare feat of three wins on the trot when they welcome Orlando Pirates in what is expected to be a mouth watering Absa Premiership encounter at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon (3pm kickoff). Both teams go into this clash at the back of contracting results in the Premier League. While the Buccaneers are looking to bounce back to winning ways having dropped four crucial points at home - a goalless stalemate against Cape Town City and 1-1 against Platinum Stars in their last two matches – City are chasing their third win in a row to equal the record they achieved two years ago. Rise and Shine won 3-2 at home to newly promoted Highlands Park and snatched a vital 1-0 away win at Maritzburg United in their last two matches before the international break.City defender Thabiso Semenya‚ who started every match (five) so far after joining from Platinum Stars in the off season‚ has urged his teammates to forget about their last two results.“What matters the most is your next game‚ not your past results. Three wins in a row will be a great confidence booster for the team but that’s not playing on our minds‚” said the 34-year-old centre-back.“We're just looking at every game as it comes and right now our focus is on Pirates and we are hoping to get a result from the match.”Both teams are on eight points on the Absa Premiership log after five matches. Pirates are third while City are in fifth place‚ but the Soweto giants have played a game less. Players and fans have their eyes firmly on the log standings. How the teams fair on the log is exactly what is running on the mind of Pirates’ goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo‚ who was outstanding for Bafana Bafana during a 1-1 friendly draw against Ghana in Durban on Tuesday. A win for either of the two teams could see them go joint top of the table should Chiefs and Arrows fail to get maximum points in their respective matches on Saturday.“It’s very important for us (Pirates) to win especially after we drew in our last two matches‚” said the 25-year-old Mhlongo.“We are determined to win this match in order to keep up with the teams on top of us. Polokwane have started well this season and we know how difficult it will be to get the full points from them.”City will also be looking to end a dismal Premier League run against Pirates and build on a promising start to the campaign. The side from Polokwane has won once‚ drawn twice and lost three times to Pirates in the six League matches since the 2013/14 season. - TMG Digital ..
