'I also envy Kaizer Chiefs'‚ says Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane

With 44 points and sitting in fourth place and left with eight matches to go‚ Mamelodi Sundowns are well-positioned for a late season assault on the teams above them as their title defence finally starts to take shape.

Having faced Cape Town City and Kaizer Chiefs already‚ Sundowns are only a win away from top spot with two games in hand.

With the winning groove now found after an unexpected winless spell‚ Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane knows his team is finding momentum at exactly the right time of the season.

They have collected nine points from their past three matches and dealt Tshwane rival SuperSport United a title body blow in the process.

“The slump did cost us but I'm happy we went through it‚" Mosimane said.

"I've had my time with draws and injuries.

"I also envy Kaizer Chiefs because they've won five matches in a row and those are a people you want to envy and copy.

"A streak like that puts you in a serious position to win the league but we're just positioning ourselves and it puts stress on the other teams‚” the Sundowns coach said.

“We've been in this position before.

• Cape Town City remain top of the log despite home draw against Wits Cape Town City came back after conceding an early goal to force a 1-1 draw against Bidvest Wits at the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday night, as Tshepo Gumede scored his first ever goal to keep them in a narrow lead at the top of the table. 

"In the 2013/14 season‚ we were nine points behind with 11 games to go and we were winning 1-0‚ 1-0 and 1-0.

"We've got the experience and we can play these games and having played in the Champions League‚ that league has really sharpened us.

"Sometimes you only just need one goal but in the process of getting that goal‚ you need to stay organised.

"The nice thing was we never let them get to us.”

Mosimane refused to rule SuperSport out of the league running and compared their resilience to Spanish side Sevilla.

They are the Nedbank Cup champions but they haven't been convincing in their title defence.

They are also walking a tightrope of having seven players on three yellow cards.

“I have to credit Stuart for being brave because I don't think I would've done what he's done.

"You've got seven yellow cards and a cup game against Kaizer Chiefs and you play them all.

"None of them pick up a yellow card and that's a sign of a beautiful game.

"They've got an odd cup they always win‚ be it the Telkom Knockout Cup or the Nedbank Cup.

"They always seem to pick up something but I wouldn't say they are out of the league.

"If they don't win the league‚ they can always play Confederations Cup football.

"After all‚ they take CAF competitions seriously.”
