Everton keen to hold onto Pienaar
Despite Steven Pienaar looking a little jaded since the beginning of the World Cup, his English club, Everton, is eager to keep him longer and away from the likes of Tottenham Hotspurs.
The UK's Sunday Mirror reported that Pienaar would become the club's highest-paid star to date if he accepted a new deal tabled by coach David Moyes.
Moyes has been in South Africa since the opening match on June 11 as a radio commentator.
When The Times bumped into Moyes at Soccer City, he didn't give much away, but instead commented on Pienaar's performance against Mexico, saying: "I thought he'd done good, yeah."
Everton wants to tie the player, who has only a year left on his contract, to a long-term contract before he goes cheaply at the end of the coming English season.
The club is reported to have offered the player about R625000 a week to stay.
But Pienaar's agent, Ivan Yanes Modia, said yesterday that the reports were not true, and no new deal had been offered.
Modia said: "No, quite frankly nothing came out of our last meeting [with Everton]. The last time I sat with them is early June. We haven't spoken to Moyes, but the player is still an Everton player, and I'm not going to talk about anything more than that. We will see."
