Pitso set to ditch oldies
Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane yesterday gave the strongest hint yet that national team players aged 30 and older will not be at the 2014 World Cup, should South Africa qualify.
The new coach outlined his vision for Bafana and was bold enough to single out midfielder MacBeth Sibaya as one of the players who will not be in contention for Brazil.
Mosimane was more sensitive about the future of Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena.
Sibaya will be 36 when the 2014 World Cup starts and Mokoena will be three years younger.
Since Motsimane was named coach, there has been much speculation that he was to axe Mokoena and was already lining up a new skipper.
But the new coach refused to be drawn on Mokoena's future, although he did suggest players on the wrong side of 30 would not be called up.
These include Bafana 2010 World Cup squad members Sibaya, Matthew Booth, Moeneeb Josephs, Siyabonga Nomvethe and Surprise Moriri.
"I don't want to be stuck with old players when I am in Brazil for the World Cup," said Mosimane. "I have to check the age group of the squad because if I don't, this will catch up with me when I have to deliver.
"We had young players in the build-up to the World Cup this year in Daylon Classen and Kermit Erasmus. This shows that we are looking to the future and want these players in the Bafana team."
Mosimane said he had begun his assessment of all areas in the team, from defenders to midfielders and strikers.
From that he would make the tough decisions about whom to call up for Bafana matches, including the qualifiers for the next Africa Cup of Nations in 2012.
"I want to refrain from making comments about individual players, but MacBeth will most likely not be around.
"We are trying everything to have an academy [for development] and to continue to scout for the future of the Bafana team. But at the moment we will look after everyone who is here," he said.
Mosimane, who repeatedly referred to his desire to have under-23 players more active at club level, is likely to bring in Classen, Erasmus and Kamohelo Mokotjo for Bafana's coming games.
Classen has not been in action for his Dutch club, Ajax Amsterdam, while Erasmus is back in South Africa with PSL champions Supersport United.
Mokotjo has been promoted to the Feyenoord first team in the Dutch first division.
Mosimane revealed that Safa had agreed to fund his trip to Europe to speak to club managers about the status of Bafana's overseas-based players.
Among the clubs he will visit are Everton and Fulham in the English Premier League and possibly FC Twente in Holland, as well as Feyenoord.
