Dinamo suspected of rigging matches

Boris Babic, Sapa-dpa | 28 July, 2010 12:540 Comments

Dinamo Zagreb is being investigated amid suspicions that one of Croatia's top football clubs has rigged at least two European matches for the benefit of the so-called betting Mafia, the Jutarnji List daily said.

Quoting sources, the newspaper said that German investigators are focused on Dinamo's 2006 European Champions League qualifier against Arsenal and the 2009 European League duel with the Romanian side Timisoara.

Dinamo lost the home match against Arsenal 3-0, at least partly owing to a miserable performance by goalkeeper Ivan Turin. Turin was already questioned by police, Dinamo vice president Zdravko Mamic confirmed this week.

"Arsenal is doubtlessly a few classes above Dinamo on the European football map, but it still is questionable how Dinamo conceded three goals in just 15 minutes," Jutarnji said.

Jutarnji also quoted a report by the weekly Nacional, which in turn quoted its sources as saying that Dinamo lost the Europa League match against Timisoara on orders from people fixing results to sweep betting houses in Europe and Asia.

Media reports said on Monday that Dinamo fixed the 2009 national cup final against Hajduk Split, which brought a 1.4-million-euro (1.8 million dollars) betting win to the alleged organisers.
