Rafael Nadal dethroned Roger Federer atop the men’s tennis rankings issued on Monday by the ATP.
Spain’s Nadal returned to the top after almost one year by virtue of a fifth French Open title on Sunday.
The Swiss Federer, who was the defending champion in Paris, lost in the quarter-finals to the later runner-up Robin Soderling of Sweden.
Nadal leads the way with 8,700 points, with Federer on 8,390 and Serb Novak Djokovic third on 6,675 points. Soderling rose from seventh to sixth on 4,755 points.
Had Federer retained the number one he would have tied Pete Sampras’ record of a total 286 weeks in first place.
