Australia’s Jelena Dokic beat Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic 2-6, 7-6 (9), 6-4 in the Malaysian Open on Sunday to earn her sixth career WTA singles title after a nine-year drought.
Dokic recovered from a first set loss to overcome the fifth-seeded Safarova in a hard-fought game that lasted 2 hours, 40 minutes.
It was Dokic’s first WTA singles victory since June 2002. The Croatian-born Dokic drifted away from the WTA tour from 2004 to ’08. She’s ranked 91st after a high of No. 4.
Safarova had an easy first set, dropping only six points on her own serve.
