First-round losers will earn R140,000
The singles winners of the US Open tennis tournament from August 30 to September 12 will each pocket $1.7-million (about R12.5-million), while first-round losers will walk away with R140,000 each.
Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams banked £1m apiece (R11.3m) for their Wimbledon triumphs. Nadal is the top seed in the men's draw for the US Open, but Williams has withdrawn because of injury.
Runners-up will take home $850,000 (R6.2m).
Quarterfinalists will become rand millionaires, earning $200,000 (R1.5m). Fourth-round losers will get $100,000.
Even those losing in the first round of the singles qualifying stage will get $3,000 (R22,000).
The winning doubles team will bag $420,000 (R3-million) and the victorious mixed doubles team will get 150,000 (R1.1m).
Total prize money for the event is just more than $21m (R154m), and that still excludes expenses of more than $1.2m paid to players.
