'Hlaudi purge' claims two new victims at SABC

The SABC board has been plunged deeper into chaos after two more members critical of operations boss Hlaudi Motsoeneng were booted out this week. The removal of accountants Rachel Kalidass and Ronny Lubisi brings to three the total number of board members axed in only a few weeks. The two were voted off the board by way of a secret ballot after being accused of fraudulent activities. The meeting took place on Thursday and by Friday their names had been removed from the SABC's website. Two weeks ago, board member Hope Zinde was voted out. Bongani Khumalo resigned in January. The four were part of a group of six board members who refused to endorse Motsoeneng's permanent appointment as chief operating officer last year. Lawyer Krish Naidoo and Vusi Mavuso were the other two.The six got letters from Communications Minister Faith Muthambi in December, asking for reasons why they should not be removed.Insiders say the push to have the two kicked out on Thursday was led by Vuyo Mhlakaza, the wife of Deputy Minister in the Presidency Buti Manamela.Mhlakaza is a former chairwoman of the SACP 's youth wing in Gauteng - a position she relinquished last week. Her husband is a member of the SACP's central committee. Ironically, the SACP has been vocal in its opposition to Motsoeneng and the board removals."She was the most vocal in terms of pushing for their removal. She is very supportive of Hlaudi. One would have thought she would take the same stance as the SACP," said an insider who attended the meeting.Mhlakaza was not available for comment.Kalidass this week presented a legal opinion that stated she had no case to answer to. But Motsoeneng's backers, led by Mhlakaza, pushed for a vote and won six to four. She said she would write to the communications portfolio committee to challenge her removal, as Zinde did.Kalidass was accused of "a fraudulent act" after leaving a board meeting early to fly to Nelspruit but only leaving Johannesburg two days later."The SABC abused its privilege of access to the media by issuing a statement before the matter was taken to the portfolio committee," she said.Lubisi said he was seeking legal advice, as he agreed with Kalidass that the removal process was illegal. He was accused of not declaring a conflict of interest as some of the "his clients" did business with the SABC.SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago declined to comment...
