SA farmers are changing their ways

Nitrogen fertilisers help global warming

Freak hail storms in Cape Town, decades of drought in the Karoo and dead gardens along the Garden Route ... South Africa is withering under climate change.

While the world's leaders bicker at international conferences over who is to blame for global warming, farmers are scrambling to adapt to an uncharted future of harsh weather that could shrivel their fruit and wipe out their wheat.

Already apple farmers around Grabouw and Elgin in the Western Cape, who need cold winters for optimal production, are struggling to produce export-quality fruit because of rising temperatures.

"If you just have a couple of days that go above a critical temperature, you get sunburn in these export apples," said Guy Midgley, head of the climate-change unit at the SA National Biodiversity Institute.

Midgley said scientists knew "with a high degree of confidence" that temperatures have warmed in much of South Africa over the past 30 years.

"The Western Cape, much of the coastal regions and, to a certain extent, the interior have warmed significantly."

In Durbanville on the outskirts of Cape Town, wine and grain farmers are counting the cost of a storm that pelted their crops with hailstones the size of golf balls late last month.

One of the farmers, Kosie Loubser, said the storm was unprecedented in the 80 years his family had owned the farm.

"We've been having very strange weather recently. It rains at the wrong time, and our grain doesn't ripen properly."

Porchia Adams, spokesman for the farmers' organisation Agri Western Cape, said: "The drought in the southern Cape is strange as well.

"They haven't had enough rain in a couple of years, which is very uncommon. And the Karoo drought has lasted for about 30 years."

Farmers have contributed to global warming through the use of nitrogen fertilisers that produce greenhouse gases as they break down.

Now many of them accept that they will have to change their ways as temperatures rise, evaporation increases and rain becomes more unpredictable.

"All of us should be concerned about it and do what we can," said Flip Nel, who farms 300ha of vegetables on the banks of the Limpopo.

Nel sells his produce to Woolworths, which this week launched a "farming for the future" initiative aimed at persuading the 500 or so farmers who supply it to cut the use of chemicals and water by building healthy soils through compost and earth-friendly cultivation methods.

"It's quite shrewd," said Mark Botha, an ecologist with the environmental group WWF. "Woolworths are going to be massively reducing their risk in 10 years' time by having a supply base that's got far more sustainable farms that are less vulnerable to the vagaries of climate change and pest outbreaks."

According to Botha, agriculture generated 18% of greenhouse gases and farm irrigation accounted for 70% of South Africa's water consumption.

geez another blame on climate change and some gasses. People we are playing into the hands of government who like the plastic bage tax that was supposed to create jobs and never has. We are going to be made to pay a carbon tax that will be wasted on the useless.

It is a fact that the Karoos was predicted to become a desert 25 years ago.

More alarmist nonsense!!
The global warming/Co2 doomsayers are confusing WEATHER with GLOBAL WARMING.
The mid-west states in the USA right now are experiencing the lowest temperatures and much more snow than in decades previous.
The Copenhagen scientific, sybaritic soiree, looks like it has collapsed before it has begun. (Thank goodness!!)
But there is no doubt that Global Warming free-loaders will be there in their thousands, arriving Ist class or in private jets, booking in to 5 star luxury hotels suites, wafted around in limos complete with heavy security, stocking up on Danish delicacies, and shopping for fashionable bling.
Despite the billions of dollars these leaches are spending - there is still NO PROOF THAT Co2 CAUSES GLOBAL WARMING.
Meanwhile millions of tax payers have to fund the alarmist's exotic lifestyles - I have lost count of just how many global warming conferences they have arranged this year alone - while millions of others subsist at starvation levles.
These people are SICK!!

The Global warming issue is abused by some, true, as is the whole Eco thing - but if you guys are denying human kind is stuffing up the planet you are simply blind. Thank god I don't have children.

Please: if you do not understand what you are talking about, and have very little knowledge on a subject (especially a scientific one), then refrain from commenting - it is irresponsible.

Allow me to explain: CO2 and world wide avarage temperatures are directly proportional to one another. This can be seen in the in the avarage temperatures and CO2 levels in the atmosphere over the the last few thousands of years (measured from air trapped in layers of ice at the poles).

The global warming of average temperatures causes extreme weather conditions to be even more extreme and more frequent. That means the winters are much colder in some years.

This also causes longer droughts more flooding in 'good' years.

Finally, global warming causes climate change (so yes, global warming itself isn't climate change) , including rainfall patterns etc.

Utter nonsense MH.
There is absolutely NO PROOF WHATSOEVER that Co2 can cause global warming.
All that exists is some VERY dodgy computer models approved by the United Nations surrogate the IPCC - largely peopled by 3rd world political appointees.
Al Gore, the leading alarmist, and darling of the IPCC with whom he shared a Nobel prize, has been shown to be a fraudulent liar.
Alarmist predictions are quite idiotic - showing pictures of tsunamis breaking over New York and London under water are so much rubbish!!
Yet he has formed a company to trade carbon credits which will make him millions!!
He should give his Nobel prize back!!
And for the record old chap - climate change has been happening since time began with warm periods and ice ages and will continue to happen in the future.
The claims that Co2 are responsible is completely unproven and merely the result of "consensus science".
In other words if enough scientists BELIEVE something - then it must be true!!!
That's the way it worked when "consensus" believed the world was flat.
Without proof most reasonable people in the world will continue to reject their nonsense claims of Co2 and global warming.
And these number are growing daily.
