Radio star trades insults online

A celebrity radio sports anchor has apologised "unreservedly" for publicly labelling a woman a "whore" and a "dog" and threatening to kick her.

Phumlani Dube, who has a slot on the flagship breakfast and drive-time shows on Ukhozi FM - listed as the country's most popular station, with more than six million listeners - launched the attack on his Facebook page this week.

His outburst came after Buhle Mnguni - a Facebook "friend", although Dube claims not to know her - called the presenter a "fat pig".

The spat started when Dube, also a budding fashion-label owner, updated his Facebook status by calling himself the next Sean John after the label owned by US rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs.

Mnguni commented online: "Listen here you fat pig, you are not P. Diddy and never will be."

Dube hit back: "Your mother is a fat pig. You must read carefully before you comment, you slut. I didn't say I'm P. Diddy. I will humiliate and kick you. You think you are showing off, you whore? Who are you? What do you have? "

Responding to suggestions on the site that he knew Mnguni, he wrote: "I don't know this dog."

Dube has since deleted the offensive comments and removed Mnguni from his "friends" list. On Friday Dube expressed remorse.

"My reaction was in the heat of the moment and was completely out of character. I was just frustrated at having received unwarranted criticism from this young lady ... I felt humiliated and very upset. Just because some of us are public figures that does not mean that we have super powers. We are allowed to make mistakes just like every other non-perfect human being."

Mnguni told the Sunday Times: "I don't care what he says about me. I don't like people like him, always thinking they are better than others. As far as I'm concerned, he can go to hell."

SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said it was a "private matter" that did not concern the broadcaster.

Media analyst Arthur Goldstuck disagreed: "If public personalities behave inappropriately in a social networking environment, it is equivalent to doing the same in public and the same consequences will apply.

"While a social network is a natural extension of anyone's ego, when it becomes part of celebrity ego and you believe you have an adoring audience who can find no wrong in you, then you are flirting with both your fans and with disaster."

I am sorry, but when you are in the limelight you must be larger than life and there is NO place to be "just human" like the rest of us. You have more responsibility on your shoulders and you should always act appropriately. Too many role models take the easy way out and say and do anything that comes to mind without even a second thought of theconsequences. You are paid too much not to take extra care with your persona and unfortunately cannot use the excuse "I'm just human"!! Take a break before you respond. Have a cup of coffee and think about it next time and the same goes for the young lady who seems to suffer from a little "Green-Eyed Monster". I have sympathy with famous people but the have to realise who they are. Too many off the cuff stuff is being bandied about nowadays with no regard to manners and appropriatedness. If we did this 200 years ago our ancestors would have us executed on the spot!

It is not secret that in some areas of KZN men abuse women, there was a case where those s@vages burnt down a family home after stripping a female member of that family off her clothes, her sin she wore a pants which the local controlling s@vage male species did not approve of, so I can understand (and yet disgusted) at dube's outburst, how dare he brings in the mother of Mnguni in this? does the uBuntu not apply to african males? respecting of elders (in this case mother of Mnguni), was it really necessary to verbally assault her? or is this a reflection of how he behaves with women in his immediate environment? sechaba, your response is so typical african s@vage like, attitudes by creatures like you towards women is a direct reason I have no respect for your ilk!!!

A virtual, online presence is still a presence. Violence and discrimination on FB is still violence and discrimination. If Phat Joe was fired for his comments about Semenya, then the SABC must fire this uKhozi DJ. When public funds pay his salary, there is no space for such disgusting behaviour - on the air, in cyberspace. Fire him.
