Nelson Lumumba Lee, 41, and his younger sister, Zenzile Monique Lee, 38, have been appointed by the Master of the High Court to become co-trustees of the ZM Makeba Trust.

They are the children of Makeba's only child, Sibongile Angela Makeba, who is deceased.

"Her wish was for us to be custodians of her trust and we want to be more proactive and ensure that any decisions taken are informed by her true descendants," said Lumumba, who is a songwriter and musician.

A tribute to Mama Africa, which was meant to take place at the Union Buildings last Sunday, was cancelled after negotiations between the Department of Arts and Culture and Morris Roda productions soured.

The department intends suing the production company for the return of R3-million it invested in the event. The organisers intend launching an application to force the department to honour its agreement.

The family has distanced itself from the debacle but Lumumba said: "We are saddened that other countries have held tributes to Mama, yet there has not been one in her country of birth."

In court papers he said: "The intellectual property rights arising out of her work - and attaching the Makeba name to it - are at the centre of the promotion and protection of her legacy and these are rights administered by the trust."

Lumumba said that the Makeba Centre for Girls, established by her in Midrand, was on the "verge of closing down if interventions are not put into place."

Animal Farm-1209 is happy and impressed that Mama Afrika’s grandchildren have moved swiftly to safeguard and promote the legacy of our Musical Icon, we are not sure though if Musical Icon is befitting for this Afrikan Giant as we feel, we are in a way caging Mama Afrika, Animal Farm-1209 honestly thinks she was more than being a Musical Icon.

Animal Farm-1209 knows that she was also a Political Activist who testified against apartheid before the United Nations in 1963, she also served as a Guinean UN delegate for one term and she did a lot for Afrikan People. It is against this background that Animal Farm-1209 feels hard done by any means of caging this Afrikan Giant into a Musical Icon.

Animal Farm-1209 is looking forward to our government through the Minister Lulu Xingwana honoring Mama Afrika and we feel a Towering statue that can be seen from all four corners of World would be suitable for Mama Afrika, just like her music touched every soul.

Other countries have honored Mama Afrika and its Azania’s turn to do the same and in the process to dwarf everything that was done in honoring this Afrikan Giant. Mama Makeba’s Legacy is one of Towering Importance!

To safeguard Mama Makeba’s Legacy is to safeguard the Legacy of Afrika!!

Tackler like all euro-centric South African whites, you know nothing about our local artists generally and obviously nothing at all Miriam Makeba.

She has 36 ALBUMS many of which are still regular sellers.

Apart from her music career she was a leading anti-apartheid activists and her contributions made a significant impact on getting sanctions in place by many western countries.

She was received by many world leaders including Hailé Selassie, Fidel Castro, John F. Kennedy and François Mitterrand and toured with many other music greats like Paul Simon, Nina Simone, Hugh Masekela, Dizzy Gillepsie.

One hit wonder huh?
