Time to get festive with Peter Pan and Scrooge

  • If you're a budding actor, you can audition for Hum Tum, a theatre production to be staged next year. Eastern Moves Production will hold auditions in the Mayville room (M1) at the Playhouse on December 9 between 1pm and 5pm.   • CHILDREN and adults will be enchanted by the classic tale of Peter Pan, coming to Durban in December. It will be staged in the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. It features Red Indians, pirates, mermaids, flying children and dazzling special effects as Neverland is brought to life. The star-studded cast includes Bryan Hiles as Peter and Darren King as the evil Captain Hook. It begins on December 8 and runs until January 10. To book, call Computicket on (083) 915-8000.
  • IF you enjoyed the hit film High School Musical, look out for Bandslam, beginning in cinemas on December 4. The holiday movie stars Vanessa Hudgens, Lisa Kudrow and Aly Michalka. The plot revolves around a rock band that goes head to head with talented musicians in a battle of the bands. The movie features great music, comedy and romance.
  • Another holiday film currently on circuit is A Christmas Carol. The movie is an animated re-telling of the classic Charles Dickens novel and centres on the bitter and miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, who hates Christmas and makes his employees work over the holidays. He is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve, the ghosts of Christmas past, Christmas present and Christmas yet to come. Scrooge is voiced by funnyman Jim Carrey.
  • THE International Association for Human Values will hold a medical camp at the Sarva Dharma Ashram in Welbedacht today. The association is a sister organisation of the Art of Living Foundation. Health professionals will be available from 8am to 2pm. It will focus on eye testing, dental check-ups, diabetic testing, blood pressure monitoring, HIV/Aids awareness, medical screening with doctors and stress management, all of which will be offered free.   • POPULAR Durban band The Dukes Combo will host a year-end bash for corporate clients and individuals at the DLI Hall in Mariott Road, Greyville, on December 12 at 7pm.   • FOR a fun summer event, catch King-size Comedy's Life's a Beach. Chris Forest will be joined by local comedians such as Martin, Jonas, Joey Rasdien, Paul Snodgrass, Malcolm Ferreira, Ndumiso Lindi, Tumi Morake and David Kau at Emperors Palace Centre Court on December 11. Parental guidance is advised. The show starts at 8pm.   • THE Joburg Theatre is staging the popular children's story Pinocchio as its end-of-year pantomime. It features veteran actor Tobie Cronje as Geppetto, Sibu Radebe as Pinocchio and the sharp and witty Fiona Coyne of The Weakest Link fame. The story revolves around the wooden puppet who is desperate to become a real boy. His adventures involve many outrageous characters, including a fairy, cat, fox and Jiminy Cricket. Thirty dancers of the South African Ballet Theatre also perform in the panto, which runs until January 10. To book call Computicket on (083) 915-8000.
  • GET into the Christmas mood by visiting Nelson Mandela Square in Johannesburg, which will be presenting an African-style Christmas celebration on November 30, with more than 100 decorated trees and the city's finest restaurants serving up amazing dishes. All you need to bring is a toy --old or new - which will be donated to child-headed households as part of the Christmas Toy Story Drive.
  • THE annual Festival of Chariots is set to take place in Lenasia on December 6. The Ratha Yatra festival, featuring a street parade, cultural shows, shopping opportunities and Indian food, will take place at the Gandhi Hall. For more info, call (083) 564-4546.
  • CATCH funnyman Kevin Perkins as his alter ego, Michael Naicker, in his new show at the Cresta Barnyard Theatre on November 30 and Broadacres on December 7. It carries an age restriction of 18.
