With our homes being retreats for us at the end of a busy day, the bedroom should be no different. Using a little style know-how, a welcoming space that doesn’t skimp on luxury is easy to achieve. Here's how

1. CHOOSE A CALMING COLOUR PALETTE

Combine serene neutral tones, such as stone and cream, with rich accent hues of dark blue, deep red or even gold. (Try these expert tips for decorating with a neutral colour palette.)

2. LAYER SOFT FURNISHINGS

Layering pillows, throws and other soft furnishings will instantly add warmth and comfort. This can be on the bed, as well as on any other bedroom furniture including an ottoman or armchair.

Mix fabrics, such as wool and silk, for interest. If you want some visual drama, consider a focal-point wall behind the bed that is covered in one of the latest textured wallpapers.

3. OPT FOR FLOORING THAT FEELS SOFT UNDERFOOT

As the bedroom is generally not a high-traffic area, carpets can be plush and in lighter colours, which are tasteful. If you prefer hard flooring, soften the look with a rug, and install underfloor heating to keep the room snug in winter.

4. PICK LIGHTING THAT ALLOWS FOR RELAXATION

Lighting has to be functional for activity, but also soft for a relaxing ambience. Dimmer switches are a good option, as are lights that can be operated individually from the bed, for the ultimate luxury.

For a glamourous touch, look at installing a chandelier. Nightstand lamps with metallic bases and shades in fabrics with a sheen are elegant, too.

5. PERSONALISE THE SPACE

Photos, candles and flowers will all help to add a personal touch to your bedroom. Group collected items on tables or on top of the dresser. It’s your sanctuary, so fill it with things that make you happy. Just remember to keep the space clutter free to maintain that restful atmosphere.

TOP TIPS FOR FURNISHING YOUR BEDROOM

• Make your bed your biggest investment. Ensure that the mattress gives your body support, and is comfortable, so you will feel rejuvenated after a night’s sleep.

•  Linen should be a high thread count, but also made from breathable fabric, such as cotton. White is a classic choice and can easily be combined with other colours.

•  Nightstands should have enough space for bedside reading, glasses and a glass of water or cup of tea. Declutter the space and use drawers to store any essential items.

• Banishing technology from the space can be more peaceful, but the reality is TVs, tablets, laptops and cellphones are part of everyday living. Place plug points strategically to hide ugly wires. Look at streamlined technology that’s not an eyesore when displayed, or ways to conceal it when it’s not in use.
