Kamini Pather trumps 'Top Billing' for local TV award

Kamini Pather's food and travel show, 'Girl Eat World', won the South African Film and Television Award in the non-fiction TV category for Best Magazine Show, beating 'Top Billing' and 'Man Cave'. The show follows Pather as she travels around the world, meeting fellow food bloggers. We caught up with Kamini to chat to her about her favourite things, global food trends and her upcoming projects.I was sceptical about a win because TopBilling is an industry stalwart, so is Janez from Man Cave. I think that worked in our favour because Girl Eat World is a fresh take on TV viewing with the social media pop-ups and the blogging aspects.story_article_left1I have received feedback from around the world, which has been hugely gratifying. With this show being broadcast on Netflix USA, I have recovered loads of encouragement from the US and Canada. People enjoy my style, which is goofy most of the time.Vegetable noodles are my favourite things. Quick to make, raw (sometimes), healthy and great in Vietnamese rolls, with pasta sauce and in salad. I often toss my warm zucchini noodles in hummus and a little feta cheese with some chilli and toasted garlic paste with a sprinkle of sesame or pumpkin seeds.Having moved back to Cape Town in February, I have been enjoying my regular haunts. Chefs Warehouse will always be a favourite and I have been a few times since my return. The Bloody Marys with angry green beans at Clarke's are second to none. And a new spot, Outrage of Modesty, seems to have some of the best hand-crafted tipple around.I adore porridge in the morning and one of the global trends is that ancient grain porridge is making a comeback. I shot at the only porridge restaurant in the world in Copenhagen. They use spelt that is cooked sous vide overnight and served with fruit sugar, nuts and a splash of milk. I make my own version with steel-cut spelt, red quinoa, rolled oats, chia seeds, a vanilla bean and coconut cream with pecans, and whatever fruit I have around. With the contracting economy, local produce and traditions will come to the fore. I ate my first smiley in Soweto when we were on shoot and it was delicious! Half a lamb's head ... it may seem gnarly to some but your view will change when you taste that soft, succulent cheek meat. I can recommend this dish to anyone.I am working on Season 2 of Girl Eat World, a spin-off of the series and two other TV shows. I've also got a book in the pipeline, as well as a range of pots. I would love to do a travel clothing range. The only constant in my daily life is exercise. I'm a keen runner, weight trainer and yogini...
