As the weather heats up and the jacarandas put on their final show of the year, there’s no better way to spend an evening than with a cold drink in your hand watching the sun go down.

To give you the best view in the city, we’ve rounded up some of Johannesburg's most popular rooftop bars to visit this summer.

1) Flames, Four Seasons Hotel, The Westcliff, Westcliff

Since it reopened as Four Seasons Hotel, The Westcliff, has rolled out an impressive offering of restaurants and events.

With a more casual atmosphere than The View upstairs, Flames has maintained the luxurious ambiance synonymous with this historic site, while simultaneously incorporating a chic young feel.

Its newly launched Thursday sundowner DJ sessions bring the city’s trendiest people together to enjoy incredible cocktails and live music from 5.30pm to 8.30pm every Thursday.

2) San Deck, Sandton Sun Hotel, Sandton

On any given evening, the San Deck at the Sandton Sun Hotel can be filled with everyone from serious businessmen to young couples.

Fire pits make this the perfect spot for a twilight hangout year-round, but the views of the sunset reflecting off Sandton’s CBD make the summer months a particularly special time to visit.

Expect a solid wine list, a glamorous atmosphere and delicious light meals including salads, seasonal soups, sandwiches, hot dogs and gourmet bunny chows from executive chef Garth Shine

3) The Living Room, Main Change Building, Maboneng

Maboneng is home to Joburg’s coolest creatives as well as The Living Room, an urban forest that boasts a great vibe and fantastic views of the city skyline.

Order a fresh fruit cocktail any time from 3pm to 9pm from Thursday to Saturday, or from noon on a Sunday – the absolute best time to visit as it's when this venue host parties with great music.
