CHOOSING A PHOTOGRAPHER

• Always choose a photographer whose style speaks to you. It’s important that you click; meet for coffee before committing to a shoot.

• Prices differ, however the industry standard is roughly R1 500 to about R2 800. Before hiring a photographer always check what’s included in the package i.e. albums, prints or digital files.

BOOKING YOUR SHOOT

• Book sufficient time for your shoot. You want to be able to enjoy it, not rush through it. Also set aside some time to do something that’ll help you relax before the shoot. Get your nails done, have a nap, or soak in the bath.

• The best time to do a bump shoot is just after the beginning of the third trimester (most photographers say between 30 and 34 weeks). Any earlier and mom isn’t quite showing yet, any later and she can tire easily. However, I have done maternity shoots just days before moms have given birth, so as long as she is feeling healthy and happy to pose for an hour, then any time after 30 weeks is ideal.

PICKING YOUR PROPS AND LOCATION

• Props can add a fun aspect to a shoot. That said, overdoing it with props can take away from the couple and, of course, the baby bump – the most important part of the photo

• It can be a good idea for moms-to-be to incorporate hobbies (playing the violin, cycling, reading, etcetera), or activities that form part of their daily routine into their shoots.

•  Or have the shoot in a room they love in their home. It is so much more special when the photographs have that kind of significance.

WHAT TO WEAR

• Don’t wear anything that makes you feel awkward — it will show in your photos.

• If you are shooting on location and wearing heels, don’t forget to take flat shoes.

• Avoid wearing neon colours and distracting patterns. Muted colours (neutrals or pastels) photograph beautifully.

• Look for something form-fitting — celebrate your perfect bump.
