Q: My penis has a bend in it when it's erect. Is this normal?

A: When an erection occurs, nerves cause the blood vessels in the penis to expand. More blood flows in and less flows out, hardening the tissue.

Having a curved erection is not necessarily a cause for concern and is actually a common feature. However, a condition known as Peyronie's disease is associated with abnormal bending and painful erections.

This is often caused by injury to the penis that results in the formation of scar tissue. Symptoms can include a thickened area or hard lump in the shaft of the penis and reduced length or girth of the organ.

Without a proper diagnosis and treatment, men who have this condition often become embarrassed and may develop sexual dysfunction and performance anxieties lasting many years.

It is advisable to consult your doctor if you notice changes or develop pain.

Treatment options include medication or surgery and these may be recommended by your urologist if symptoms persist or worsen.
