The decision on naming the next Springbok coach won't happen this year after the subject was taken off the agenda at Friday's South African Rugby Union (Saru) general council meeting. Initially it had been set for the meeting, but after Heyneke Meyer stepped down last week, there wasn't enough time to provide a full short list of candidates for inspection.Former Stormers coach Allister Coetzee is the frontrunner to succeed Meyer but Saru remained mum on the subject. Coetzee has been evasive when asked if he has the job."They are all rumours," Coetzee said in a text from Japan where is coaching Kobe Kobelco.Sources said Coetzee is all but assured the job with Saru's general manager of rugby, Rassie Erasmus, set to play a pivotal role behind the scenes in terms of strategy and planning.story_article_left1The Boks next play in June - a three-test home series against Ireland - so there is no urgency to reveal the name now.The Stormers, though, were under more pressure to name a coach after Eddie Jones came and went in weeks, leaving the Cape Super Rugby franchise without anyone at the helm.Yesterday, director of rugby Gert Smal named long-term assistant coach and former Bok centre Robbie Fleck as interim head coach for the 2016 season.Smal pursued former All Black coach John Mitchell after Jones' sudden departure and talks were advanced. Jones walking out to take the England job was embarrassing and the WPRFU board not accepting his replacement candidate has undermined Smal's power. When Jones left, Smal said he would only consider candidates with "six or seven years Super Rugby experience and international experience as well". Fleck doesn't meet those criteria. But once Mitchell was rejected there was nowhere for Smal to turn."We will all continue to provide maximum support and back-up to Robbie and wish him well as he takes the reigns," Smal said. "We will reassess the Super Rugby coaching position at the end of the 2016 Stormers season again."Saru did reveal a new format for the 2016 Currie Cup which will feature all 14 provincial unions and Namibia...
