Parts of western and northern Johannesburg were without water Friday after two major pipes burst, events that will lead to at least five water storage facilities in South Africa’s biggest city running dry by the end of the day.

The burst pipes are in the Randburg and Emmarentia areas, Johannesburg Water said Friday in an e-mailed statement. Four reservoirs and a water tower are empty, or soon will be, and water tankers are in use to assist residents, the utility said.

The Emmarentia leak should be fixed by late Friday, spokeswoman Eleanor Mavimbela said by e-mail. The pipe in Randburg will be repaired by Saturday afternoon.
