SONA red carpet: these shoes ain't made for walking

Bunions, polka dots, rainbow pumps and health shoes were hard to ignore on the red carpet leading into parliament on Thursday. While many of the younger women bore the brunt of six- and eight-inch heels on the cobblestones, older women mostly opted for flat shoes - with some even donning Green Cross sandals.Smart guests covered their comfortable footwear with long dresses, but others, like Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula's wife Nozuko, showed off their tootsies in all their glory. She sported a nude pair of red-bottomed Christian Louboutin stilettos that matched her outfit.Zamaphemba Ntuli, guest of Mpumalanga MP Pat Sibande, had also chosen her shoes carefully ."I wanted to blend African and Western together, hence the white pencil skirt and top which I accessorised with a Zulu hat and jewellery, and my shoes are animal print. They work perfectly with the garment," Ntuli said."I got these at a Durban store called Dolce Vita. They are so comfortable I could go all night in these."Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba's wife, Noma, wore a long gold dress designed by Gert-Johan Coetzee, but was reluctant to show off her shoes - which also turned out to be gold.story_article_left1"That is a lot of gold," called out one of the press contingent on the red carpet, to which she retaliated: "I love gold, that's why."Ninini Masango, wife of MP Siphosezwe Masango of KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga, was decked in Ndebele regalia to show that she is a "proud Ndebele wife".Her colourful hand-painted takkies made walking the red carpet a breeze.Other hot heels belonged to MP Lindiwe Maseko, who wore rainbow pumps to match her bag, and MP Sizani Dlamini-Dubazana's daughter Nobuntu BusaBuntu, who opted for white wedge heels.Matching from head to toe was ANC MP Thandi Mahambehlala, who sported a brown and yellow polka-dot outfit with matching heels. But going fancy in designer gear was not for DA member Terri Stander, who bravely confessed to having "pieced together" her outfit. Despite that, her red stiletto sandals were rather on point."How come I don't get asked about my shoes? They are Vince Camuto shoes. Aren't they lovely?" she said.Western Cape Premier Helen Zille remained loyal in her party colour, dressed in blue from head to toe. Seeing her stunning pointed blue toe strap heels worn with navy stockings was rather disappointing. But it was Small Business Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu's bunions that had social media abuzz, after EFF member Sentletse Diakanyo posted a photo of Zulu's feet in black diamanté heels on Twitter."Ginger flaunting her corns on the red carpet," he tweeted. One Julian Tshipana responded: "Ginger has such horrific corns."Humbulani Funyufunyu tweeted: "Leave her alone. She developed those in the bush fighting for our liberation."Sasa Mohapi, wife of National Council of Provinces member Jihad Mohapi, was one of several in black and gold eight-inch heels. "I had a variety of shoes to pick from but these were my favourite ... I got them from Sandton."..
