Whether you want to go on a canoeing adventure or simply unwind alongside a babbling brook, a holiday at one of these riverside camping sites around South Africa might be just what you're looking for

1. RIVERHOUSE CHALETS AND CAMPING

A campsite on the banks of the Breede River on a farm near Worcester. Any place that says “bring canoes“ should be encouraged, in my book. See breedekloof.com.

2. KRUISRIVIER GUEST FARM

A riverside camp set on a sheep farm in the foothills of the Swartberg, near Calitzdorp, with plenty of activities on offer. See kruisrivier.co.za.

3. WILDERNESS EBB-AND-FLOW REST CAMP

A large site on the banks of the Touw River near Wilderness. A fantastic canoe journey up the river through natural forest awaits you. See sanparks.org.

4. RIVERSIDE 4x4 BUSH CAMP

The 4x4 trail is the main attraction with a route along the Vals River. E-mail orapa@act.co.za.

5. ON THE BANKS OF THE ORANGE

Camping wild on the Orange River is superb — but you’ll need to go on a guided rafting trip to do it. Various operators work on different sections but the Nama Canyon section is unmissable. See felixunite.co.za.
