Our travel adviser tackles your destination dilemmas, visa puzzles and itinerary ideas AN AFRICAN ROAD TRIPMy two adult brothers and I wish to undertake a road trip that will take us through Botswana and Namibia. The journey will start and end in Johannesburg. It should last seven-to-eight days and include Christmas but exclude New Year's Eve, which we would like celebrate with our parents in Limpopo. Please suggest an itinerary for not-so-frequent travellers who wish to begin by exploring these countries. - Ashford MabiluThe most direct route from Johannesburg to Windhoek, via Lobatse, is 1459km, on the Trans-Kalahari/Kgalagadi Highway.story_article_left1Key places along the route are Lobatse (you could detour slightly to see Gaborone), Kanye, Jwaneng, Kang, Ghanzi and Buitepos, which is just over the border in Namibia. It's best to keep your driving to daylight hours, as there can be both wild and domestic animals on the road. Fill up with fuel wherever possible.Day one would end in Lobatse or Gaborone. Ghanzi would make a good stop on day two. The highway has transformed it into a small town with accommodation options - try the Kalahari Arms Hotel.Once you reach Windhoek on day three, you should take a break from driving and spend a full day exploring the capital. You could stay at Chameleon Backpackers, which offers excellent and affordable accommodation. Then head to the historic town of Swakopmund on the coast on day five, where you should spend an extra day exploring sights such as the massive dunes near Walvis Bay.From there you could head home via Windhoek on the B1 road to Keetmanshoop and Upington. From Walvis Bay, you could also take the very scenic but remote gravel road to Helmeringhausen via Solitaire and down to the B4 to Luderitz, which is a very atmospheric, if quiet, place, especially the diamond-mining ghost town at Kolmanskop. Be prepared for long distances with very few towns or fuel stops on this route. From there, drive back to Keetmanshoop - see the wild horses at Garub on the way - and head for Upington via Karasburg and take the N14 home.mini_story_image_hright1December is busy so plan and book your accommodation now.CURRENCY QUANDARYI wish to hike the Camino in Spain. My travel wallet debit card is loaded with dollars. Can I use it to draw euros at an ATM in Spain? - Sandy du PerezYes. As TravelWallet is a prepaid MasterCard, you can swipe it wherever you see the MasterCard sign or withdraw money at any ATM bearing the Cirrus or MasterCard logos. Any ATM will only dispense the currency of the country it is in, in this case euros. You would still be wise to travel with some notes in hard currency, just in case...
