10 tricks to being a happy camper

29 May 2016 - 02:00 By Paul Ash

Paul Ash lists the little things that can make a big difference to your happiness and comfort in the great outdoors 1) Oven bagsOven bags are good for protecting cameras, phones and other gear that hates water. Forget about sandwich bags - I once lost a phone thanks to a bum seal on one of those.2) Shade nettingIt is said the smallest things bring the greatest happiness and in this case, a 3m-long section of shade netting - the green nylon stuff you see keeping the sun off the plants at nurseries - is it. I fold it in half and use it as a doormat outside the tent. Happy result? No more sand or dirt in the tent. It is a brilliant doorman.3) Canvas bucketsI have a few of these which are used for everything from doing the dishes to bailing out kayaks after a capsize. They fold small, they are tough as a Sherman tank and they hold their water. I bought some pieces of canvas and had a tailor sew them up for me, but you can buy them online (Amazon.com, from $8.99).Supplied story_article_right14) Hair elasticsWhen we manage to prise them away from Alphonse the Cat who likes to hide them, hair elastics have more uses than a Swiss army knife. We use them for sealing food bags, attaching stuff to our backpacks and keeping tent pegs together. If there are any left, my girl uses them in her hair.5) Wet wipesYou're camping. You're going to get dirty. Use a wet wipe before you muck around with everybody else's food.6) VaselineA tiny little tub of Vaseline goes a long way to soothe chafing, minor burns and chapped lips. It's cheap too. 7) Razor bladeKeep a couple of these in your camping box as a stand-by knife. Just remember to cover one side with a small piece of cardboard and some tape and you have a sharp little blade.8) Duct tapeThey say the world is held together with duct tape. "They," of course, don't know what they are saying. Still, if you have a roll in your camping box, you can bet it will be used for something over the course of a camping weekend.story_article_right29) A camping boxI finally brought order to the chaos of camping life with a nice, big plastic box from the local hardware. All the stuff above plus stove, lamp, gas, cookware, plates, a hammock, dishwashing liquid, a tatty oven glove and a few lengths of rope live in the box. We chuck it in the back of the car and go - because camping is best when it's spontaneous.Supplied 10) BurnshieldWe can be clumsy campers, my girl and I, especially around the gas stove, so we always have a bottle of Burnshield - a tea-tree-based gel and one of the world's great inventions - close to hand...
