Cele warns cop killers of sleepless nights
National police commissioner Bheki Cele yesterday used the funeral service of a slain reservist to warn that the police will win the war on crime and catch criminals even if they hid in "mountains, rivers or hills".
Police reservist Lieutenant-Colonel Marco Ishlove, who was killed in a shoot-out between police and a gang of five men almost two weeks ago in the Johannesburg suburb of Northcliff, was given a state funeral yesterday.
Ishlove, a financial and tax consultant who dedicated the past 30 years of his life to fighting crime, was hailed as a "brave soldier", a "hero" and a man who made the ultimate sacrifice to uphold the rule of law.
The service was held at the Mosaïek Teatro, in Fairland, near the suburb in which he was killed.
An impassioned Cele said: "We shall win this war. We shall not allow the country to be ruled by criminals."
Cele said police officers have not been told to "shoot first and ask [questions] later" but they had to act decisively to defend communities against criminals.
Cele said criminals do not use "broomsticks or feather dusters", adding that if someone had to die it should not be a police officer.
"If that is a policy of 'shoot to kill', let it be ... no member [of the police] must die with a gun in his hand."
Cele said that killers of policemen will have "sleepless nights".
One of Ishlove's daughters, Juliette, 36, said her father was a "pillar of strength and an absolute rock".
She said he went where "angels feared to tread to protect".
"Daddy, we will miss your sharp intellect, wit and wisdom."
His elder daughter, Marcia, 38, said after her father was buried at West Park Cemetery that the family was extremely proud of him, and that he had been honoured fittingly by the police he served.
Ishlove's fellow reservist, Colonel Len Cramer, called him a "man's man".
"He was not afraid to spring into action and never flinched.
"He paid the ultimate sacrifice doing what he loved most."
Another reservist, Constable Cliff Bond, said Ishlove was a "true inspiration".
Bond was with Ishlove when he was killed.
"We left a great man behind. To South Africa he was a hero. His blood was truly blue."
Bond said people who believed that the police were too aggressive towards criminals should keep their mouths shut.
"Men lose their lives for the freedom we enjoy. They have to make judgments in a split second."
Ishlove was buried at the cemetery's Police Acre.
Gautengpolice commissioner Mzwandile Petros, whose home was broken into at the weekend, attended the funeral.
"I was privileged to be associated with him, though I didn't know him personally," Petros said.

Posted 333 days agoSadly though - along with rhetoric, must come action. I for one (And many more like me) would go outside to check if Gen. (snigger) Cele were to tell me that the sun was shining. Even more sadly, this holds true for the rest of the ruling party members too.

Posted 333 days agoOur police are supposed to do what they are trained to do, and not just beat people up, not to talk of shooting-to-kill????? I think that is just pushing it. Many INNOCENT people have lost their lives as a result of the negligence of the police. I think the police commisioner - Bheki Cele - should make sure that those who are so-called police men/women still remember what they were trained to do and not just beat people up (or kill) for no reason!!!!! The 1million whites should start applying for jobs.... not to be put in the force, just because of what again?????? pleeease.....

Posted 333 days agoNow let all able bodied responsible people of South Africa,Black,White, Yellow, pink join the SA Police reserves so that the criminals no that every member of the public is a Reservist and to top it all, the Reservist will see to it that all lazy and useless Policeman and women will be worked out of the Police FORCE!!!!.
At this time most of the NEW Police Officials are there because "
I Have got a JOB and i get a pay and to HELL with Police work".KFC and Bottle Stores get all the attention of the NEW Police members. As a matter of fact, the safest place in a shopping center is Kentucky Fried Chicken,WHY?,Because there is always a Police presence there.
At the scene of a shoot out,you always find our own Military automatic fire arms on the scene used by the criminals whom are all card carrying ANC Members.
Clean up the Government and crime will drop by 90%.For SURE.

Posted 333 days agoThis belligerent stance helps no one. I am certain when criminals hear him talking about “shooting to kill” and “ask questions later” self-preservation dictate that they shoot before they are shot at so you now have the wild west out there and innocent bystanders are being caught in the cross fire. It is idiotic to think you’ll scare criminals away from crime particularly the very dangerous who will not hesitate to take life even if it is that of a criminal.
To add to the problem we have now turned a police service into a military machine, they are now all about shooting and killing but not serving communities in which they are stationed. Getting arrested in Soweto for example as easy, I have been detained for questioning police conduct and people like me who hold the police force accountable are said to “know too much” and our police force do not like someone who know their civil rights and is not afraid to stand up for them.
Bheki Cele is a Director General for heaven’s sake, he should stay in the background and ensure the smooth running of the force like upgrading of infrastructure and IT capability; moving into dockets into an electronic platform would be a good start. He needs to provide answers on dodgy leases and leave policing to people who have been trained to do just that, his is an administrative function and nothing more.
The problem is we have a Commissioner who just loves police cameras and thinks that being front page news is more important than focusing on key-deliverables. If you want to make a dent on crime then you’d be better advised to lead by your actions, arrest the dangerous criminals, syndicates, heist in transit head honchos and ATM bombers out there; only then will they realise you really mean business. Right now you making noise from behind the podium, no one is convinced Bheki, not even the criminals.
