Fashion "model, mogul and mom" Kimora Lee Simmons landed in Cape Town yesterday for the Mandela Legacy Canvas auction.
A City of Cape Town initiative, the canvas carries hand-prints, messages and signatures of 67 celebrities from all over the world. It will be auctioned on Saturday to raise funds for the Nelson Mandela Foundation and mayoral charities.
Simmons was flown to the country by the City of Cape Town as a VIP guest at the auction. She will host a Destiny magazine party at Kenny Kunene's ZAR club in Cape Town on Saturday after the auction. Simmons features on the cover of this month's issue of Destiny.
In an interview with the magazine, she spoke about balancing work, family life and new projects, including a skin-care range, since leaving fashion brand Baby Phat.
Shortly after the mother of three and her husband, actor Djimon Hounsou, landed she tweeted: "Very excited 2 hve been invited 2 S.Africa 2 continue work w the Nelson Mandela Foundation! So #Inspired by all thts being done!"
Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille and Archbishop Desmond Tutu will today unveil the 5m x 4m Mandela Legacy Canvas, which features the hand-prints of Prince Albert of Monaco, Reggie Bush, Pam Golding and Bryan Habana.
The city council said: "The work of art symbolises Mr Mandela's call for everyone to contribute at least 67 minutes on International Mandela Day to help the needy."
