Vavi warns ANC on corruption - again

Cosatu general-secretary Zwelinzima Vavi has again warned the ANC and its affiliates of the dangers of corruption.

Speaking at the biennial congress of the eThekwini south region of the SA Democratic Teachers Union in Durban yesterday, Vavi said that if corruption were not stopped the ruling party would find itself in the "dustbin" in 2014, a general election year.

He lashed out at the corruption allegations levelled at Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.

"In 2014, it would be 20 years into democracy, so it would difficult to go to the people and ask them to vote for the ANC again, saying they must remember the blood of Chris Hani, because by that time it would be irrelevant. People would want jobs, nothing else," he said.

Vavi said it was crucial for the ANC and President Jacob Zuma to implement the priorities - jobs and economy - or there would be a "disaster" waiting to happen.

On corruption, Vavi said he will never go to court and support an individual who has been accused of corruption.

"I will never make that mistake again in my life and I think we must all operate on the basis that if a person has been accused of corruption, he must not involve us no matter how much we love them.

"I will also never praise an individual but an organisation and I will never sing songs about an individual. Neither will I ever wear a T-shirt bearing the face of an individual, except Nelson Mandela."

Vavi in the past had supported Zuma by making an appearance and singing revolutionary songs at court when the ANC president faced corruption charges.

Vavi also welcomed Public Protector Thuli Madonsela to the club of people who are "victimised" for speaking out against corruption.

"I also received death threats in June last year before the World Cup. I reported the matter to the national police commissioner and the minister of police. A senior police officer was sent out investigate, but a year later, I still don't know of the findings. I don't know whether they were real or not so, to the Public Protector, I say welcome on board."

He added that it had become clear that all the people fighting or speaking out against corruption were being victimised.

Vavi backed Madonsela's call for protection, saying the reported criminal investigations against her were "suspicious". He said the timing of the reports that Madonsela was being investigated were "suspicious".

"It's suspicious that the Public Protector is under investigation. The question is why now, why all of a sudden? Today she was supposed to give a report on over a R1-billion investigations into a building involving the national police commissioner and some businessman here in Durban, but she could not do it. It raises questions," Vavi said.

Madonsela is finalising reports on contracts that the police entered into for the leasing of buildings in Pretoria and Durban. In her preliminary report, she found national police commissioner Bheki Cele guilty of maladministration.

Thanks God that some of our Political elites starts to see the light. I hope the trend continues like this until it reaches the ordinary people on the ground that a popular, corrupt, ignorant and self enriching politician does not make one a good leader unless we are not worried about the future of our country.

Is Vavi for real? if yes then finally some sense has prevailed, the great Thabo Mbeki must be smilling all the way to South Sudan, flying over the Lithuli house and/or Union building must be a breeze for him watching the Polokwane A team all knives out against themselves, for once i think he is glad he lost the Polokwane match

History has shown that the countries that have been successful fighting corruption have been the countries that have setup special prosecutors to investigated corruptions. If Vavi is serious about fighting corruption, he would be calling for this country to setup a special prosecutors with no political ties with power to investigate and bring corrupted people to justice regardless of whom they may be. He trying to fight corruption in SA by trying to shame these corrupted people but, the long arm of the law has to take over like the US government did in Chicago.

Vavi I for one like what you say but your message will never be credible untill you walk away from the ANC . If you feel so strong about the corruption issue you must form your own political party and oppose the ANC. How can you keep on critisising the organisation and remain a member.

Comrade Vavi, only the brave walk the talk. All can see that there is a plot against the Public Protector but someone like you needs to act against those who are hatching the plot not just talk about on the media. It's also clear that Zuma is not about to fire Cele for mismanagement alluded to by the Public Protector, in the same way Mbeki protected Selebi. Be bold and take action or as they say 'you must have balls'.

Vavi is a king unto himself, and deserve praises for not being 'bang-gaat' like baas frik who thinks with the body-by-product hole than using a gift GOD gave all- BRAIN!
I only wish this could be something VAVI would stick to forever because this is the only way we could ensure that more and more of our leaders are chosen and elected on the basis of this kind as it means a lot for a leader that distances themselves from 'trivial' behaviour and action, and actually starts doing the right thing. NOT open churches all-over, and suddenly want to think everyone wants and have to be part of it- KNOW what is needed, and once you prophes any kind of message over it, then make sure it is something to put your name onto, not to wind-up compromising self.

I see you also suffer from a miss spent youth. No education left you struggeling to comprehend. The ANC is a perfect fit for people like you. Ypu are a good indicator of the lack of exellence pressent in your party. You may actually be a step ahead of your leader when it comes to pure intellect.

Ag pah leeez. In one breath Vavi bashes corruption and in the next he has his federation back the corrupted ANC.

Well at least he is making the right noises. Someone as powerful as Vavi needs to say these things, but it would be better if he acted rather than just spoke.

Amongst the biggest corruptions in the country is Vavi's and Cosatu's continued support for the ANC, despite their own members striking and (as reported by Gwede Mantashe) voting against the ANC.

It's all very well Vavi trying to play "Cde clean" or "good cop"; but when his Cosatu term is up he will be looking to the ANC to provide a cushy state job with lotsa bling. He will only attack them far enough to fool the people.

I agree with Vavi, it is time we give more jobs and rid the private and public sectors of corruption, which you all too often notice in white-run companies. There is still a majority of White Capital Rule in South Africa, something that has not changed much in the past 17 years, which we will root out by 2014 with stricter BEE, EE and AA policy to ensure transformation and that the rightful poor and marginalised receive the jobs and salaries they fought for during the apartheid days

No my angelface, this is where you have it all completely wrong. AA and BEE is not there to "protect" Black people against whites, and it is not "in favour of the majority". In fact, BEE and AA support all Asian, coloured and disabled minorities in South Africa, as well as women who have been marginalised by white supremist males for the past 338 years of colonial rule here.

These policies are in place to correct the imbalance of the "9% minority group" (whites) owning the majority of capital while the majority of Black South Africans are left with nothing. The sooner transformation takes place, the better the counmtry will be for us all

To reply to your views - i have employed a completely unbiased report to address you mindset appropriately:

Insert from London Times: "South Africa is the only country in the world where affirmative action is in the favour of the majority who has complete political control. The fact that the political majority requires affirmative action to protect them against a 9% minority group is testament to a complete failure on their part to build their own wealth making structures, such that their only solution is to take it from others."

Just show you never can change the cheetahs spots.

Vavi and COSATU should know by now that actions speak louder than words. The country is burning while the leadership sits and twiddles its collective thumbs and procrastinates with endless talks leading no-where. You say its all about jobs but the current action of your unions is destroying that possibility. Rather, why don't you get the Government to ban all imports that can or once were produced in this great land, even if a moratorium of say 5 years is needed. Local is lekker!!! Think about the benefits to our economy and not the benefits to some other economy or someones pockets. Indications are that there is another recession looming on the horizon. Act now, save jobs, create jobs, strengthen business, strengthen our economy.

into disarray every year, when his UNION members
embark on violent strikes. You are the real culprit, Vavi.
