Malema 'hasn't paid ANC member fees'

FRANK MAPONYA | 30 January, 2012 01:29
Julius Malema. File photo.

The ANC leadership battle is getting dirty - and Julius Malema has been accused of failing to pay his membership fee.

He is said to have last paid his R12 annual ANC membership fee in 2009.

Those who fail to pay the fee are barred from ANC activities. Malema, leader of the ANC Youth League, is facing a five-year suspension from the ruling party for his public comments about it and its leaders.

Records in The Times' possession show that Malema renewed his league membership on July 14 2009 for a R10 fee.

Approached for comment yesterday, a surprised Malema told The Times it was news to him that his membership had not been renewed.

He referred the newspaper to Jacob Lebogo, the league's provincial secretary. But he could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Malema and his lieutenants, Lebogo and Jossie Buthane, have reportedly refused to renew their membership of the ANC's Seshego branch, in Polokwane, Limpopo. Buthane is chairman of the Milo Malatjie branch of the ANC in Seshego .

Boy Mamabolo was elected chairman of the branch during an annual general meeting held at Mowana Lodge, in Seshego, yesterday.

Mamabolo said that every year branches would remind their members to renew their membership.

He said this was done for Malema, Lebogo and Buthane but the three failed to respond, reportedly because the league's Peter Mokaba region had been disbanded.

But the branch has not been dissolved and the region has appealed against the decision to disband it.

Buthane refuted claims that the three had not renewed their membership .

"Malema is a member in good standing, so are Lebogo and myself," Buthane said.

He said the disbanding of the region meant the disbanding of all branches in the region and that yesterday's meeting in Seshego was not sanctioned by the youth league.

The ANC leadership battle, which has now been joined by youth league structures, is going to get fiercer.

Malema and his top leadership will find out soon whether their appeal has succeeded.

At the centre of the tension between Malema and some within the ANC is his call for a change in party leadership when the ruling party holds its national elective conference in Mangaung in December.

The youth league wants ANC president Jacob Zuma replaced by his deputy, Kgalema Motlanthe, and party secretary-general Gwede Mantashe replaced by Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula.

  • Speaking at a centenary event in Mogale City, yesterday, Gauteng ANC Youth League chairman Lebohang Maile said the ANC should not be led by populists.

He said the party should rid itself of people who were obsessed with the accumulation of wealth.

The youth league in Gauteng said it will push for the scrapping of the tender system when the ANC holds its policy conference in June.

Zuma hasn't paid his fees either. Fee payment is for the masses only. Non payment is a mark of authority and seniority.... ie big deal (like blue lights)

More tro the poit, Juju has not "paid his dues".
Let him go please, We are tired of the young 30`s stories, He said he renew the membership, that`s simply mean he is fired. and not allowed to tell anyone, they pledge not to even tell their loyal voters. a suspended person is not allowed to renew. that`s all and thank you because we now know that the prodigal son will come back with empty wallet. for him it is better to go to Mugabe again.

I think it is sad that these are the kind of news we have to read about as South Africans. Progressive countries are discussing investment and developmental goals and here we are making a big deal about Malema not paying his R12 per year membership fee.

Really sad!!

He was born in the ANC and his 'alcohol-free' blood is black, green and yellow. So why must he pay membership fees? He IS the ANC!

To think of it - if indeed Malema IS the ANC - this is actually great news.
It means they TOO are on their way out. LOL

P.S. The only things POST94 reads is ANC Today and Stalin's Memoirs.

This is more like a witch hunt. What they fail to inform us is whether the whole of the ANC top brass has paid/renewed their membership as well, including Jacob Zuma.

How can you fail to pay R12 a year??...Sure you could afford that?...But then accounting wasnt really your strong point, was it?...This clown gets funnier and funnier with each passing day.

It is highly possible that almost all senior anc politicians are no longer paying for the membership, they only expect the poor of the poorest to pay

Momma, who said they want any feedback? Btw I was about to reply to your comment and saw that both your and mine have vanished again. My guess is that your account has been locked as well. Now go and sit in the naughty corner :)

Na. They won't lock me out, my friend. They know I get all shirtsey with them if they try.
I still wish that we had the Wednesday monitor more often. At least we get more than two stories and we often get one worth commenting on.

Now lets see how quickly the 'alakazam' of disappearing tricks takes :)

...Editor Goldberg or whoever is in his place, should be more respectful of the readers and commentators and publish his rules for commenting, because the stated rules don't list his 'exceptions' : what articles are for commenting and from what time to what time. It seems as after hours and over the week end one is not allowed to.........

It seems to me such bigotry and insult to the intelligence, that columns and notes worth reading and commenting, and enlightening like Prof Jansen's or Justice Malala's, even if you don't agree with their points of view, are not open for comments (why???) and garbage pieces like Khanyi Mbau nude pics or the panties or not of sexy Kelly Khumalo's..........

I hear from my connections at TL that the comments are closed at night because it is against the labour law to make the moderator work 24 hours a day, seven days a week. when he goes home, comments are closed for obvious reasons. and as to having more than four stories open for comments, I am told that more 'bad' comments would go through if that was done. as for which stories get opened, I guess it's the 'safer' ones that get opened (but that's just my assumption, my contact didn't tell me that.

Now I will forgive you for being so irksome on a Monday. Your comment was just a bit too wordy, rich in detail and eager to defend the indefensible - despite the first line. Hence the question.

..There you have dear mom....

For instance, the current "Big Read"note (not for comments, naturally), as cynical as it looks, it is painfully true!!!........Change the face of "Walter, The Bwana" from Verwoerd to Chairman Jean Ping (what are the chinese doing with the AU by the way, though we know the answer?) and anything in between...His body and mind and age in History, are just the same.........

.......as for Barney Malema..........It is not that he forgot, or couldn't pay....It is a simple example of the arrogant contempt displayed by ANC "elite" (or at least, they believe themselves as such), even for their own party, the one which they profess to 'dye' for.............
How dare them to ask his Purple majesty to pay fees...............

I see little things amusing little minds again......yes, including the editor and timeslive. People are grappling with whether the world should entertain the new "logic" which is State capitalism and its merits or demerits or if we should allow Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to contest and here we are worried about Malema's ANC card..........what is our print media coming to.
