Popular DJ Euphonik and his ex-girlfriend Bonang Matheba's domestic troubles deepened on Thursday when the radio and TV presenter dragged her former beau to court on charges of assault.

Euphonik, whose real name is Themba Nkosi, arrived at the Randburg Magistrate's Court wearing sneakers, jeans, a checked shirt and jacket. He was seemingly unperturbed and took numerous calls, chatting and laughing as he waited for his case to begin.

After three hours, he was called to the dock, where charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, domestic violence and malicious damage to property were put to him. But within 10 minutes he was out of there, because his case was postponed due to outstanding statements.

He will appear at the same court on July 3.

More than one newspaper reported over the weekend that TV and radio darling Matheba had obtained a protection order against Nkosi after a quarrel that turned physical.

It is alleged that an argument erupted between the power couple while they were at Nkosi's home in Westdene, Johannesburg.

Matheba then left his house without closing the gate and went back to her apartment in Hyde Park.

Nkosi followed her but found the door to her house locked and he then allegedly entered through a window.

It is also alleged that, when he got inside, he slapped Matheba around and kicked her.

The Times's sister newspaper Sunday World reported that the YFM radio presenter, who also presents the music show Live on SABC1 on Fridays, was rescued by neighbours, who heard her screams.

After the reports, Nkosi released a statement via his publicist, Melinda Shaw, in which he said he was intent on clearing his name - disputing claims he had left Matheba battered and bruised.

"Those allegations are not true and I am seeking legal advice to clear my name. I will take the matter to court if necessary," he said.

"Women abuse is a serious crime and I condemn it in the strongest possible terms."

Nkosi is on R3000 bail.

He presented himself to the Bramley police station on Wednesday.

As far as star couples go, the pair were one of the most idolised, with both at the top of their game.

Nkosi can be seen on the decks at only the top parties, while Matheba is often the MC at A-list events.
