A 19-year-old against whom charges have been dropped is expected to turn state witness and testify against the others accused in the video-taped gang rape of a Soweto teenager.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Mtunzi Mhaga said the charges were dropped yesterday because the man played a "minimal role" in the crime.

He was one of seven accused, four of them minors, allegedly involved in the gang rape of a 17-year-old believed to be mentally disabled. The accused have not been asked to plead.

on Wednesday, two adults, aged 18 and 19, were released on R1500 bail each. The minors, aged between 13 and 17, are out on bail of R500. Charges of rape against them have been withdrawn.
