Rap 'queen' headed for SA
American rapper Lil' Kim is returning to South Africa for three shows in as many days in September.
The 37-year-old MC was in the country last year with Timbaland, Ciara, Phat Joe and DJ Scratch as part of Kenny Kunene's ZAR Fest. This time, she is on a solo mission.
She will be with her 14-member entourage.
Hunnypot Entertainment said yesterday that the rapper, real name Kimberly Jones, will play the Standard Bank Arena in Johannesburg on September 6, Durban's Wavehouse the next night, and Trinity Nightclub in Cape Town on September 8.
While she promised that she wanted to shoot a music video in South Africa on her previous tour, nothing has come of it yet. But one thing she seems intent on doing is making it clear that she has the tiara as the hip-hop queen.
She is already on the road with her Return of the Queen tour - playing clubs and arenas in the US.
Hunnypot's Oren Bermeister said yesterday: "There has been an excellent response. The industry is very excited. So we're expecting that the events will be a huge success."
Her nemesis, Nicki Minaj, has been teasing her South African "Barbz" about a possible tour here before the end of the year .
Relations between the self-professed queen and the popular upstart have been prickly since the latter released her catchy Stupid Hoe, which many believe is a go at Lil' Kim.
Via her alter ego, Roman Zolanski, Minaj spits: "I get it cracking like a bad back/b**ch talkin' she the queen, when she looking like a lab rat/ I'm Angelina, you Jennifer/Come on b**ch, you see where Brad at."
During a press conference in South Africa last year, Lil' Kim addressed the Minaj feud, saying: "I came out at a time when today's female rappers were still very young and I paved the way for where they are today. I deserve the respect of being a pioneer and there's just so much negativity out there these days among female rappers.
"I tried to extend my support out to her and, when it was rejected, I didn't take well to that, especially when the she's disrespected me in such a public way. I refuse to talk about her and give her any more press," she added.
But there is no doubt Minaj is the talk of the town currently, with her provocative outfits, performances and lyrics, but Lil' Kim has signalled her intention to snatch her "queen" wig back from the 29-year-old.
Lil' Kim has a Grammy for best pop collaboration with vocals for Lady Marmalade, which also featured Christina Aguilera, Pink and Mya.
Bermeister said his organisation was in negotiations with local stars Toya Delazey and Micasa to open for Lil' Kim - Micasa's already busy schedule has restricted them to the opening night of the tour.
He said tickets could be bought from www.hunnypotentertainment.com
