Jantjies deserves to play: iLIVE

Duncan Innes, by e-mail | 02 July, 2012 00:37

I agree with AD Pincus ("More gold, less blue, Heyneke", Letters, June 26), who criticised Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer's decision not to bring Elton Jantjies onto the field to replace a poorly performing Morne Steyn during the third rugby test.

Meyer said he had thought about bringing Jantjies on, but had decided against it because Jantjies had no experience in tests .

Meyer's response, of course, puts Jantjies in a Catch-22 situation which many black players face in this country: he can't get onto the field because he doesn't have test experience, but he doesn't have test experience because his coach won't let him on the field.

Last year, Peter de Villiers, took Jantjies all the way to Europe on the northern hemisphere Springbok tour, but never allowed him to play in any of the tests there.

Why does Jantjies keep getting selected without ever getting game time?

Hopefully, he is not just there to make the Boks look more acceptable in terms of the number of black players in their squad.

He is a very good flyhalf and he deserves the chance to play.
