RISING STAR: Five minutes with hip-hop artist Mhlathi
Sibusiso Khuzwayo aka Mhlathi is an upcoming artist from Umlazi township on the South Coast, KwaZulu-Natal.
I started making hip-hop music at a very young age. We played a lot of rap music at home and this inspired me to start rapping.
My big break was in 2009 when I released an EP. I won two Original Material Awards in 2010 for best single for Krump vs House.
This year I was one of the 12 finalists in the Hansa Pilsener Legend in the Making Tour, which gave me the opportunity to perform in front of 16000 people at the Back to the City hip-hop event.
I'm currently working on a mixtape, Jaw Breaker, which will be released in August.
The tape has a hit track already playlisted on 5FM's Hip-Hop Powernight with DJ C-Live. I'm also on TTP Presents Hip-Hop Sessions Volume 2 compilation. My track Pho Kunani is the second single and has reached No1 on the Gagasi FM hip-hop charts.
My next project after the success of Krump vs House is working on my first album, Ghetto Stories.
My greatest inspiration is to be with family simply because we've been through a lot of ups and downs together.
Best advice Thabiso Khati once said to me after my performance, "Build your own following and make it with them."
Music is what puts a smile on even a hungry tummy or face.
