ON THE PLAYLIST: Brandi Carlie: Bear Creek

Jackie May | 03 August, 2012 00:17

Brandi's fourth album has moments of sadness - she wrote the songs shortly after a break-up. But it is beautiful, timeless, and gentle sounding.

On her favourite track, Raising Hell, she sings, "I've been down with a broken heart since the day I learned to speak", and "I dug a hole inside my heart to put you in your grave".

She recently said: "I just got through a weird couple of years and there was a lot of coming to terms with passings in my life, and so songs are just from that, the evidence of it."

It might be an indie break-up album, but there are enough tracks that make you feel happy and want to dance. That is probably due to the warmth and friendly twang of her voice and the fact that the album is soulful.
