Grammy-winning US crooner Anthony Hamilton could not have asked for a more gratifying start to his South African tour - aside from a sold-out show last night.

Hamilton, 41, opened his four-date tour - his second in the country in three years - at the Ellis Park Arena, Johannesburg, last night.

Earlier in the day, he visited the Banakekeleni orphanage in Alexandra.

He followed that up with a press conference at Montecasino where he accepted a plaque celebrating the commercial success of all his albums.

Pray For Me, a haunting ballad from his latest album, Back To Love, tops the Kaya FM Top 40. It sits at No3 on the Metro FM Top 40.

"Yeah, I am surprised how well it's done here," he said of the album.

The North Carolina-born singer plays at Cape Town's Convention Centre tonight. He returns to Ellis Park Arena tomorrow for another show.

Hamilton closes the whirlwind tour in Durban, at the Wavehouse.
