Cops quizzed over gang violence

Western Cape police management has come under fire from parliamentarians for the way in which it is handling Cape Town's ongoing gang violence.

Early on Monday morning, four young men were shot execution-style in Ravensmead, increasing the number of people who have been killed in gang-related violence this year alone to 27, according to the provincial government.

Last week, President Jacob Zuma rejected a request by Premier Helen Zille for the army to be called in to patrol the streets of some of the areas affected by gang-related violence.

Yesterday, Western Cape police commissioner Arno Lamoer and his top management appeared before parliament's portfolio committee on police.

The ACDP's Kenneth Meshoe said police could do more to combat gang-related violence, and questioned their will.

Lamoer told the committee that police had a "proper" strategy in place to fight gangsterism but won 't publicise it .

He said the arrests of corrupt police officers involved with gangsters had shown there was a will within the service to fight gangsterism and drugs.
