This long weekend food and wine take centre stage in Gauteng.

International and local celebrity chefs have gathered for various events at the Gauteng leg of The Good Food and Wine Show, where visitors can taste wines, beers and cocktails, and go shopping for gourmet food.

Australia's Adam Liaw is here as one of the celebrity judges for the LG Home Chef Championships.

He will help select two out of 32 teams of two each for the world championships in Dubai next month. Since it is Heritage weekend and the finalists will be announced on Heritage Day, the dishes will have a particularly South African flavour.

Tammy Selby and Linda Movel will make fragrant lamb curry with Basmati rice, while Thuso Mbasa and Akana Maluleke will make chicken Thsokombela.

Said Liaw, who flew to Johannesburg from Japan via Australia: "Judging food is a lot easier than people think. Once you've taken a mouthful, and immediately think of taking another, you know the dish is good.

"I ask myself: 'If somebody serves this to me, will I finish everything on my plate'?"

  • The Good Food and Wine Show opens today and runs until Monday at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg.
