Three men are behind bars for their alleged role in the murder of South African boxing legend Corrie Sanders.

Sanders was shot dead on Saturday while he and his family were celebrating a nephew's 21st birthday near Hartbeespoort Dam.

The three - and a fourth suspect who has yet to be arrested - are believed to have shot Sanders as he tried to protect his daughter from the gunmen.

The arrests were welcomed by Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa.

The men , who will appear in the Brits Magistrate's Court on Monday, were arrested yesterday after police received a tip-off.

North West police spokesman, Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said police raided a shack in the Oukasi informal settlement outside Brits.

"During the raid on the first shack, police arrested two men and seized car keys, wallets, a cellphone, cash and jewellery taken during the robbery," he said.

Police then followed up on further information and raided another shack, where they arrested a third suspect.

"While searching the second shack police found a handbag that had allegedly been taken in the robbery," he said.

The suspects had been charged with murder and armed robbery.

Ngubane said the police were hoping to arrest the fourth suspect soon.
