Assault charges against Mbili sister dropped

Charges against the sister of assault victim Tina Mbili, Ross Harichand, were withdrawn last week.

Harichand was accused of stabbing Michael Padayachee, Mbili's former lover and the father of her 22-month-old daughter, and his friend.

On the same day as the alleged stabbing, Padayachee was arrested for assault, intimidation and crimen injuria. He allegedly tried to take the toddler from Mbili and threw the child over a 4m gate.

Padayachee, who is in custody on an attempted murder charge in connection with the alleged assault on Mbili, was not in the Verulam Magistrate's Court when Harichand was told that the assault charges against her had been dropped.

In a bail application two weeks ago, Padayachee told the Phoenix Magistrate's Court that his former lover had been told to accuse him of being her attacker by her sister.

He claims that Mbili was assaulted and robbed by two unknown men on August 24.

Padayachee is accused of "striking with clenched fists, kicking and throttling" Mbili until she lost consciousness in a park in Phoenix, north of Durban.

Padayachee was arrested in Verulam earlier this month after a two-week manhunt.

He was denied bail and will make his next court appearance on November 15.

Mbili was discharged from hospital last week.
