The ANC in Gauteng says "no one is going to be killed" at branch general meetings at which thousands of members will nominate candidates for the party's leadership.

ANC provincial secretary David Makhura said the executive had identified "hot spots" - areas that had experienced disruptions of official meetings - and would be on the lookout for those intent on intimidating members who hold different views on the leadership.

The branch general meetings start today.

Makhura said the ruling party will take strong action against ill-disciplined members and would press criminal charges when members a re found to be on the wrong side of the law.
