BEHIND THE MUSIC: Tracking Lark's moody sounds
Paul Rez of Lark takes us through their latest album, Gong Is Struck, track by track.
LONG MANTRA
I took a recording of Inge [Beckmann, vocalist] singing the intro to Afflatusand stretched it out, making it 900% longer. There was this powerful, heavy atmosphere - a good way to set the scene.
ASCENDING
The basic beat was inspired by some crazy bass sounds I made with an old EMS Synthi, which looks like old medical equipment .
SEEK TO FIND
We wanted to capture the hypnotic effect of tribal rhythms in electronic form.
AFFLATUS
This was the first song Inge and I wrote for the new album. It embodies a lot of themes for the album. Ritual, ceremony, potions, primal rhythms.
STOLE THE MOON
Inge originally wrote this song as a piano piece. We brought in violinist Vicente Espi to work with us on the string sections.
WE ARE GROWING
Inge had mentioned wanting to cover this track [the Shaka Zulu theme song by Margaret Singana]. We recorded seven layers of drumming for it.
I AM ZEUS
The main synth line which starts the song was the basis and Inge wrote an incredibly beautiful and powerful melody to go with it.
TWO WOLVES
We wanted the story to take centre stage.
HE NOT A MAN
I was in London when I laid down the basic idea for this song and sent it to Inge in Cape Town to write vocals. It was like a game of musical tennis .
