Ticket-winner gets more than she bargained for

PEARL BOSHOMANE | 01 November, 2012 00:48

When Bonolo Moeng won tickets through The Times/AFI competition to attend Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Africa 2013, she never imagined that she would become something of a celebrity.

But that's just what happened after Moeng was featured on Scott Schuman's hugely popular style blog, The Sartorialist.

"The people who know The Sartorialist think it's pretty awesome [that I'm on it]," she said.

Schuman took a photo of 20-year-old Moeng last Wednesday, on the fashion week's opening night, and put it on his website the following day.

"When I went to the fashion awards on Sunday quite a few people were like, 'Hey, you're the girl on The Sartorialist'. It was really cool," Moeng said.

The stylist and political science student had tried to contact Schuman before attending the show.

"When I found out he was coming to South Africa, I asked him for an interview, but he didn't respond."

After winning the competition, Moeng's hope of meeting Schuman was renewed.

"I prepared myself for him," she says.

"I saw him before he saw me and I took pictures of him before he took pictures of me. Then he saw me and was like, 'You don't look so bad yourself'."

The picture has received rave reviews from commenters on the site, with most of them complimenting Moeng's "gorgeous face" and "beautiful eyes".

What does the subject herself think of the portrait?

"I absolutely love it," she said.

Moeng also caught the eye of Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, the executive chairperson of African Fashion International, who complimented her on her strong sense of style.

"This is probably the highlight of my year," said Moeng.

With more than 20 shows over four days, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Africa presented designers from South Africa, Cote D'Ivoire, Mozambique, Cameroon, Rwanda, Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Trinidad, Nigeria and Ghana.
