Duke, the Randburg cat shot on Wednesday night with a .22 rifle, has died.

His owners Helen and Corrie Maritz keep looking for him around the house, forgetting that their much loved pet is no more.

Late on Wednesday Corrie heard a shot and thought that it was a firework. But he soon noticed that his Siberian forest cat had been shot and rushed him to the local vet who operated on him.

On Friday morning, however, the night vet phoned the family and delivered the bad news that their beloved Duke had not made it through the night.

Though the Maritz family was celebrating their 14-year-old son's birthday yesterday, Helen was in tears.

"We are all very sad," she said.

"I know a lot of people won't understand, but he was a member of the family. I was really hoping that he was going to make it."

Helen said she still could not come to terms with the cruelty of such an attack on their much-loved pet.

"We still can't believe that there is somebody who would do this.

"What type of person would fire a gun at that time on a busy evening?

"We are close to the Randburg High School, people are walking and exercising here all the time.

"Why use this high-calibre weapon?" she asked.

"I don't understand; and why would they target my cat?"

Duke will be cremated by the vet but Helen said she will not keep the ashes.
