The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra held its final concert of the year last night in Johannesburg amid fears that it might not perform again.

The orchestra staff of about 40 have not been paid for three months, said musician Danny Bower, and last month the orchestra applied for business rescue.

There would be a lot of snot and trane (tears and sadness), said French horn player Shannon Armer before last night's concert.

Managing director Shadrack Bokaba said yesterday he hoped the orchestra would be saved.

"We have raised the financial distress signal and we are hoping that we can turn this situation around."
