Twilight's box office sparkle

If you're not a Twihard (an obsessive fan of the Twilight Saga film series), look away now.

The franchise's fifth and final film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's romantic vampire saga,Breaking Dawn: Part 2, is already smashing local box office records.

Released on Friday, the movie - starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner - was seen by 275 000 people in its first three days at local cinemas.

It earned R10.9 million at the box office.

That makes it the biggest three-day opening in this country.

The previous instalments of the film series also opened with impressive numbers.

Eclipse 's opening generated R11.7 million, and the opening of Breaking Dawn: Part 1 pulled in R11 million. But both these amounts were achieved over a period of five days .

In the US, Breaking Dawn: Part 2 earned R1.2 billion in its opening weekend.

Despite the massive box office, Breaking Dawn: Part 2 has had to endure the scorn of most movie critics.

On Metacritic, the website that records reviews and ratings from various critics and gives an average score, Breaking Dawn: Part 2 scored a lacklustre 52/100.

The Washington Post called it "unsurprisingly, a silly and somewhat cheesily made waste of time"; Rolling Stone called it "cinematic tedium".

The average Metacritic rating for the previous four Twilight films is similarly unimpressive : Twilight scored 56, New Moon 44, Eclipse 58 and Breaking Dawn: Part 1 45 .

The big question is who will most successfully woo cinema audiences: a sparkling vampire or a well-dressed super spy as there might still be a cinema duel between it and another international blockbuster - the latest James Bond movie Skyfall.

Daniel Craig's third 007 movie has already grossed R1.4 billion within two weeks of its release in North America alone.

It will debut in South Africa on November 30.

The British High Commission in South Africa has sent out invitations for the local premiere of Skyfall tomorrow - Bond girl Bérénice Marlohe, who plays Séverine, will be in attendance.

Skyfall, which also stars Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Javier Bardem and Naomie Harris , scored an impressive 81/100 on Metacritic, equalling the score given Craig' s first outing as everybody's favourite British assassin in Casino Royale .
