The Durban Magistrate's Court yesterday ordered Brigadier Thuso Tshika, the acting head of the police's crime intelligence unit in KwaZulu-Natal, to hand over all relevant information on the alleged misuse of his unit's slush fund before December 6.
It is believed some R5-million was lost to fraud and corruption.
The slush fund also formed part of the fraud case against Lieutenant-General Richard Mdluli, who was accused of using the funds to buy himself and his relatives cars and property. Those charges were provisionally withdrawn.
Tshika was served with a section 205 subpoena, compelling him to release documents that could assist the investigation into the fund.
A task team, headed Brigadier Simon Madonsela, was appointed in March to investigate alleged fraud within the provincial crime intelligence unit.
Tshika ignored a previous subpoena to release the documents, saying he knew nothing about them.
A well-known Durban businessman is also suspected of being involved in the alleged misuse of the fund.
Police national spokesman Brigadier Phuti Setati refrained from commenting on the case.
"We do not comment on intelligence," said Setati.
