Olympic gold medallist Cameron van der Burgh was named the style icon of the year at the South African Style awards in Johannesburg last night.

A search for his name - the internet is dominated by pictures of him in his Speedos - reveals his enviable physique.

But after his win last night --weeks after he was named in the top 10 GQ best-dressed men - he might find himself being listed as a fashion model more frequently.

The breaststroke champ deposed Highveld Stereo presenter Pabi Moloi, who got the award last year.

The awards employ a judging panel, which nominates two people members feel are consistently stylish in the nine categories.

Highveld Stereo presenter Anele Mdoda's partnership with fashion label Loin Cloth & Ashes designer Anisa Mpungwe seems to have paid handsome dividends: she walked away with the most stylish media personality award.

Mdoda and Mpungwe, who struck up a friendship during their university days, recently collaborated on a range (Anele for Loin Cloth & Ashes) showcased at last month's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Africa.

New author and actress Bonnie Henna won the most stylish performing artist (film) award, while the eclectic Toya de Lazy took the most stylish performing artist (music) award.

Suzaan Heyns, who in four years since launching her label has become a favourite with celebrities, was named the most stylish designer.

Swedish designer Nina Jarebrink was last night's guest of honour.

Jarebrink can list UK diva Jessie J among her more well-known customers.

Other celebrities who attended last night's shindig included Rosie Motene, Jenna Diver, last year's most stylish media personality Bonang Matheba, and TV presenter Liezel van der Westhuizen.
