A PASSION for economics and teaching has been the driving force behind lecturer Dr Adrian Saville and his work in and outside the classroom.

Saville, 44, has been named one of the top 10 nominees of the inaugural Economist Intelligence Unit's Business Professor of the Year Award.

He is the only African nominated among 206 candidates from some of the world's best-known business schools.

"This just shows that South African business education is able to compete with some of the world's greatest business minds," said Saville, who teaches at the Gordon Institute of Business Science in Johannesburg and was nominated by a student from his 2010 MBA class.

Executive director of academic programmes at GIBS Shireen Chengadu said: "This is an incredible opportunity to showcase Adrian's talents as a world-class professor."

With 3381 votes, Saville is in third position. The four finalists will be announced after the next elimination round in February.

The finalists will participate in an economics teach-off webcast from London in March.

The winner will get $100000 in prize money.

Saville has pledged to donate half of the money to help fund the launch of a women in leadership centre and the remaining $50000 to non-profit organisation Equal Education.
